I want to tell you about this cosy little hotel I stayed at in Amador, Panama City which I would highly recommend to anyone travelling to the Republic of Panama and looking for hotels in Panama . It’s called The Country Inn & Suites, Amador. It’s in a great location, close to restaurants, bars and the Canal and the walkways of the Canal. That’s if you enjoy restaurants, bars, and long walks along the Canal.

The view from my hotel room was superb – because it is fabulously located right by the entrance of the Panama Canal. From my balcony, and I’m very partial to relaxing on a balcony, with a glass of wine in hand perhaps, where I could see the famous Canal and the Bridge of the Americas and the Pacific Ocean. Other rooms have a view of the garden, but I preferred to watch the ships on the Canal, gliding to their destinations. I mean, when one is in the city of Panama, you should at least see the Panama Canal.

The Country Inn & Suites Amador is in a great location for tourists who enjoy the waterfront and want to savour the dining and nightlife of the waterfront and the hustle and bustle of downtown Panama City life. The city is a busy metropolis, something like Miami, something like Spain and definitely urban.

There are 98 rooms, standard and junior sized and nine apartment suites. If you care to find out what’s going on in the rest of the world while you are on your vacation in Panama City, you can obtain complimentary local and international newspapers. Of course you will find in your hotel room all the usual comforts such as telephones, satellite tv, internet coffee makers, and fax access. The apartment suites come with a kitchen with kitchen equipment. Business traveller will find the hotel is also suitable for business travel needs, providing conference and banquet facilities. Also, conveniently you will find laundry facilities, free parking and shuttle service. Breakfast is included in the price. For children, there is a playground and a swimming pool For outside activities there are deep sea fishing trips, a Jacuzzi, tennis courts and fitness facilities. Of course, there are beaches close by. There are also spa services offered for those wanting the pleasures a spa has to offer. And what is a vacation without some luxuries to the “Self”.

What did I like about my holiday in Panama City staying at the Country Inn & Suites Amador? Well, first of all the prices are not bad at all and the rooms are clean, spacious and the beds are comfortable to sleep in. One needs a good bed to sleep in on a vacation. It’s a very clean hotel and the comfortable bed helps. The service was good and the staff was friendly. And as I said, it was marvellous to sit on my balcony and in the morning sip my coffee and watch large ships as they cruise along the Panama Canal.

I’m looking forward to getting Panama which will be sooner rather than later. There is so much to explore in Panama. I will book a hotel room again at the Country Inn & Suites Amador. It’s one of the best priced hotels in Panama, a great deal and near to everything you want to see on your first vacation in Panama.

Whether you are running a bed and breakfast, a guest house, a small country inn, a gite or a chambre d’hotes you can no longer rely on people telephoning to make a reservation. If you don’t have room reservation software, it is hurting your business!

What’s worse, you have no idea how badly.

A recent survey found that although many people still pick up the telephone when booking accommodation, there are a growing number who flat out will not book if they can’t do it online. If you are one of the many guest houses who is yet to get to grips with web reservation software, then these people are visiting your website, but booking down the road. How many guests are you losing?

To some extent it is understandable. Most people running a bed and breakfast aren’t computer or internet experts. If you search for room reservation software you will find a bewildering range of options from full blown hotel management systems – that seem complex enough to run a country – to free reservation software downloads which take for ever to work out, have no support, and frequently aren’t up to the job!

So what’s the answer? If you just want something that you can set up easily, and that is simple for your guests to use, how do you sort the competent from the over-priced and over-complex? How do you avoid wasting days trying to make a budget solution work?

You have two options. First, a number of room reservation software suppliers now offer free trials. There is plenty of choice so if you can’t make it work in a few hours – or get adequate support – you can just bin it and start again. A bit hit and miss perhaps, but it’s not costing you anything.

Second would be to go for a bed and breakfast reservation software which you don’t need to download at all. A managed solution. Someone else handles the software and just gives you access to it via the internet. You need nothing more than a log-in and password. Some of the better ones even provide code to allow you to put the room reservation system on your own site. Far from being complicated, it’s nothing more than copy and paste. A five minute job for you or your webmaster.

When you’re running a bed and breakfast don’t really want to be messing about with software – but not having it is undoubtedly costing you money. What you need is a simple, efficient solution that just gets on with it. The good news is, they are out there!

People are always suggesting you “think outside the box”, well when it comes to bed and breakfast marketing I’m going to suggest you think outside the bed!

The appearance of your bed and breakfast (or guest house, country inn, gite, or whatever accommodation you have) is very important, of course. How the building and rooms appear on your website and any brochure or advertising will have a big impact on people’s decision so it’s vital to get that aspect right. If you can afford a professional photographer it’s a worthwhile investment. If you can’t, take a hundred pictures with a digital camera to get one good one if that’s how many it takes!

However, that kind of thing is what you might call “ordinary” bed and breakfast marketing. It’s what everyone does. What are you going to do to stand out from the crowd?

Rather than thinking in generalities, get specific and get targeted. What do I mean? Well most of the time you probably think you’ll stand out by improving your accommodation and making it more appealing to your guests. To an extent that’s correct – there’s certainly nothing wrong with that – but by the time your guests experience it they have already made the decision to come and stay with you.

It will impact on their experience, it will make them decide whether or not to stay with you again or whether to recommend you to friends or colleagues… but that’s after they’ve paid their bill and left.

What you need to be doing is drawing more people in, so you need to think about why people are coming to your area and how to appeal to them. You can break that down into quite small market segments – what’s generally called “niche marketing”. It may not be important at the height of the season if you are in a particularly popular tourist area, but what happens out of season (apart from you having a good rest)?

The tourists might not be around in winter but what about business events locally? Is there a conference or exhibition center? That kind of venue tries to fill its space as often as it can. Can you appeal to the people coming into your area for those kind of things? Perhaps there is a specialist season – like fishing or hunting – that you can take advantage of? You might think that something like a home show, for example, would appeal only to fairly local people who don’t need accommodation… but the exhibitors themselves have to stay somewhere and not all of them turn up in Winnebagos!

The other question of course is how you get to those potential guests? Contacting local businesses and conference organizers is one way but by far the biggest reach will be via the internet. The most effective way to use that particular bed and breakfast marketing tool is with a blog, which we’ll get to in another article soon.
